Start with the whole
Before naming a detail, observe the outline. Is the leaf broad, fan-shaped, or finely divided? Notice whether you are looking at one divided leaf or multiple leaves attached to a stem.
Look beneath the surface
A fern frond can carry sori on its underside: clusters of spore-producing structures. Their arrangement adds information that an overhead view leaves out. Look gently, without scraping or collecting.
Compare, then ask
Monstera leaves can develop internal openings; ginkgo leaves spread into a fan. Sketch the differences before reaching for an explanation. A good research question often begins with an ordinary detail.
